Can anyone advise a source of stainless steel springs for the plunger of a snap shackle? I don't want to have replace the whole thing partly because it is spliced into the halyard (Yes - I know that is not always ideal but it's what is there!) I've looked on line without success but am hoping for a quick fix.
Grateful for any help.

A lot of small generic parts like this are available on ebay. Get some accurate measurements and have a look (searching for stainless springs generally, not specifically snap-shackles).

I did a temporary repair with the spring from a cheap ballpoint pen a few years ago. It's still working fine. I wouldn't recommend such a bodge but it worked for me.

I seem to have a lot of plastic impact garden sprinklers all defunct. These have various stainless steel springs in them. Far to big for what you want but the ss wire can be reshaped to a smaller spring. I use a drill bit in a vice. The end of the wire is trapped also in the vice then I wind the ss wire around the shaft of the drill bit. (of suitable size)
Being faily thin the wire can be stretched to suit the job. Just a thought olewill

How about cutting the snap shackle with a hacksaw & replacing it with a normal shackle
Or google how to do a splice & re splice the halliard - assuming enough length.
It is not that hard & a nice feeling once you have learned how

As olewill points out, a spring from a Biro is unlikely to be stainless and will probably disintegrate after a while. I'd look for a more suitable one but it would do as a temp lashup.
