I posted a few weeks ago about a friends Perkins M29 that was smoking under load and noisy. He had checked and renewed the exhaust. A wire up the elbow showed it to be clear but when removed it was choked down to a pencil dia. It was just before the water inlet so water flow was not affected. He has been told that it is due to slow running and not getting the engine hot enough. He had the same problem last year and on reflection it was following an 8hr run that it cleared.
So a happy ending, and don't forget a wire up your elbow is not sufficient, you need to take it off it it is suspect.
