I have an old gm10, it runs fine on idle but when I put it into gear it now either just cuts out and struggles to keep revs up, or if it get going black smoke and carbon come from the exhaust. Ive taken off the injector pump and had it checked its fine, the injector was chcked last year and was fine, any ideas. Im hoping to sail up the welsh coast in two weeks but cant without the engine.

Sounds very like the exhaust elbow is coked up-1GMs are prone to this. Take it off & have a look. If you need to replace it prepare to be shocked at the price of a new one!.

Definitely sounds like a blocked exhaust elbow. Just removing the hose and looking is not enough - you have to remove it and check it. If blocked you may be able to chip away the crud but don't be surprised if the whole elbow collapses! It'll run like a new engine when replaced!

That sounds like such good news(apart from the cost of the new elbow) Im going to remove it later this week, thanks for the help my trip may be back on!

I checked the air filter and thats ok, there did seem to be some carbon on the inside of the intake how would I clean out a choked air intake, none of the manuals explain where that goes ?
