Came across another stupid piece of proposed legislation by our DEFRA civil servants in a consultation paper today. Yachts will be exempt unless anybody has paid any monies to be on the vessel or anybody is paid to crew or skipper the yacht. Fixed penalties to be imposed and for not having warning notices plastered everybody.
Some garbage about the plods to police this being the MCA who due to their workload will not be expected to be active on these new laws unless a complaint is made.

Ever feeling like losing the will to live?

I look forward to seeing this implimented on all charter yachts /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Much the same was said at the time when the Code of Practice for Small Commercial Vessels was introduced. I suppose they have to draw the line somewhere

WHY...

...are you calling this man's perfectly valid comment a "rant"?

Do you live and express yourself solely by cliche?

You can smoke in the dinghy, on a painter, 20 meters behind the boat, if you'll go to those lengths, then you are a REAL smoker!

Fox hunting, pistol shooting, four wheel drives, and now cigarettes (which I don't use). It seems the world is becoming full of intolerant people. Whatever happened to 'live and let live'?

Smoking in confined spaces can hardly be said to 'live and let live'. A recent survey published on BBC Radio 4 suggested that secondary, or passive, smoking kills more people than those who actually draw on the dreaded weed.

The issue is surely about curtailment of "freedoms" which, if exercised, adversely impact others. The boundary of what is regarded as generally acceptable behaviour constantly moves. When I was young buses had two labels fitted downstairs: "Smoking Forbidden" and "Spitting Prohibited". (I always wondered whether "forbidden" or "prohibited" was the more restrictive...) It's a long time since I've seen a notice prohibiting spitting, the assumption being, presumably, that normal people wouldn't even think of it.

Taking the longer view, a couple of hundred years ago people would happily pay to get a good viewpoint for a public hanging - it was socially acceptable behaviour. A hundred years further back, slavery was generally considered OK.

So what will be banned next? Given the state of most city pavements, my vote is for chewing gum!
