smoking ad41b\'s\' ?
Much has been posted about the clouds of smoke from ad41's (and other makes / models ) of marine engines and much time money spent trying to solve the issue and cleaning up the film of black deposits.
Following on from my post about 2 years ago on the subject - terrible smoke on start up and smoke trail behind at speed....
After much ££££'s we spent attempting to cure the 'problem' and finding some success with additives we, at least, became convinced it was simply the poor grade 'red' marine fuel which the engine just wasn't designed to run on. At the time 'learned' forumites advised various views :- "Volvo's and especially 41's are always notoriously smokey", "we filled with white on a trip to france and then ours stopped", "red is just white with dye in it so it wont make any difference", etc etc
We relocated (by road) to Spain and then onto Mallorca in Spring 2008. Smoked very badly all the way from Barcelona to Port Andraixt (boat was filthy on arrival !). Re-filled with white and lightly smoked to Alcudia.
Convinced that it was aways caused by the 'red rubbish' gradually on diluting out and using up the red in the tank during last year, I'm happy to report that the engines have now quit smoking (and the additives) - is that sort of a marine version of d&d free ?
A friend (who still has smokey tamb41's in the UK and who has witnessed mine in all their glory) visited a couple of weeks back to see if my folklore tale was true and he was shocked. On cold start up (5 deg) now only the very slight whiff of smoke and nothing more thereafter. Further evidence is that on reflection around the Marina you just dont see boats belching out clouds of smoke on start up.
Having yesterday topped up at 86 cents a litre for just plain Mallorcan 100% 'diesel' I think I've got my conclusion at least.
