is this normal. on viewing a boat with a t90 engine, on starting up the engine, it seems to me that there was a lot of smoke at first then, not so much but idid not at the time run the engine for long, am i right , that if when engine gets warm this will stop, or if not is the engine nackerd would appreciate any thoughts as i am definatley not an engine type...

This is not uncommon in most engines from cold : the engine turns over and fuel is injected the engine starts and the unburnt fuel remains this is issued out in the heavy dark smoke it should then run with little or n smoke ..However if it (Smoke) persists the reasons are many; Injection problem? over injection (Injector fault)fuel contamination?also sometimes the engine is not running hot enough (Reduce raw water by sea cock little! by little check for improvement)as some engines require less cooling than others check water output for heat..also but rarely..the exhaust pipe..Maybe? oversize or too long or too much upcurl to outlet if the engine and set up is original then this is unlikely you didnt state the colour of the smoke I am not an expert if in doubt get a check by a reputable marine engineer....best of luck....

I've got a moody 33 with the same engine, We had loads of problem with smoke in our first year. So the second winter we removed the engine and overhauled all of the fuel injection equipment, pump injectors, filters, pipe work and tank, the tank had large amounts of jelly in the bottom ,so was replaced with a plastic one specially made for us at half the price of any in PBO the spec was the same. If anyone wants the address of the company in County Durham drop me a line. The engine was then repainted and bench tested before re installation, new exhaust system from ASAP all new wiring and panel instruments. cost about 1K but worth the piece of mind. Cos it will let you down in a force 7 trying to get back onto harbour. When the engine was stripped there wasn't a lot of thing to do to the metal bits ie bearing, rings etc. We changed all the oil seals and pump seals and impellers. The thorney crofts are such good engines if you service them regulary the don't give any prob. Mines as clean as a new engine in fact shows some of the new boats up.
Make sure when you put it back together the injector pump timing is right this is one easy way of creating loads of smoke and an inefficent engine. Good luck! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
