Hope someone can help as this is driving me mad. I've tried everything I know but still no good. Stripped and cleaned with all new gaskets etc,new screen, new plug and made sure the batt. voltage was ok. On start up it backfires through the exhaust until after about 30secs it fires up and the longer it runs the smokier it gets. I've also tried running it without the exhaust and without the inlet trunk but nothing seems to make any difference. Help.

Has this worked in the past or is it a second hand unit. Does it have the correct fuel pump. If its a pump for a more powerful heater then it's getting too much fuel.

Hi, try running the heater on parafin, it will run hotter and it will help to clean it out. How long have you run it for? has it got hot enough to burn off any fuel left inside the heater?

Peter

Yes it was a secondhand unit which came without a pump but I got another one for it. Do you know if there is a chart of what the different pumps deliver? Can you also tell me if this running procedure is correct. Fan runs for about 30 secs, pump begins to pulse roughly every second and then the unit begins to fire up. After about 30 secs the fan speed doubles and the pump begins to pulse about 4 or 5 times per second and that is how it continues, producing more and more smoke the longer it is run until it eventually stops on it's own after 30 min or so.

In answer to the other suggestion, yes I have tried running it on paraffin and it really stinks.

Ted.

It does sound as though the heater is geting too much fuel. I would sugest getting another pump, (are you certain that your pump is for a D1LC?). The running sequence is correct, it will be shuting down on overheat after 30 minutes.

Peter

Post above is correct. However, there are other pumps that should do the job. I think the pump for your heater is rated as 1-3 kw. Your running sequence sounds correct.

Ah at last i know the answer to this one, but only because i fiddled with mine and made it do the same thing !

What has happened is someone has altered the air control valve which feeds tthe combustion. Now you might ask where is this then. Its the flat head plastic screw which is held in with a star type clip. you have to have the cover off to adjust it.
The bad news is its been so long since i did this i can rembember where the arrow on the thing has to be (it isnt where you might think when looking as there are some arrows on themwhich can be lined up !)

Trial and error im afraid and you need to re-assemble every time, ps you need to make sure the red rubber type gasket fits well around the base.

Thanks for all the replies. I've noticed that screw under the star clip and did wonder what it was for, I'm sure it has not been meddled with so I am going to try to reduce the fuel flow to see if that makes any difference to how the unit runs.

Easy check would be to do a fuel quantity test - the DILC manual tells you how, and it's quick and easy. This will confirm whether the pump's delivering the correct amount of fuel.

FFS, how can you begin to mess around with it without a manual? You can download it here. Heard of Google?

Are you always this cool calm & collected when helping people? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Good link tho'.

are you using the proper micro bore fuel plastic fuel hose, another thing i have seen is hose being used that has a larger internal diameter which causes the fuel to surge as the pump pulses. the micro stuff im refering to is sold on ebay and is solid opaque white in colour with a 2mm bore.

[/ QUOTE ]Mine is copper microbore pipe - as sold for marine installation by Eber' themselves. Haven't seen the white stuff.
