smelly loo\'s

A few years ago I seem to remember a post on here re, using swimming pool cleaner to cure the rotten egg smell coming from the loo. I have done a search but can't seem to find it. anybody else know about this?

Re: smelly loo\'s

The smell is coming from decomposing sealife in the INLET hose. The ONLY way(IMHO) to cure the smell is to fill the inlet hose with FRESH water - Guaranteed to work. I did this by fitting a Tee piece with a ball valve, as close to the hull inlet seacock as possible. Ball valve normally closed. When leaving the boat, shut off stop cock. put hose from Tee piece in a fresh water container, open ball valve, pump half a dozen times, close ball valve. You can now leave for several weeks and when next operated - NO SMELL!!

Re: smelly loo\'s

I posted the original article a couple of years ago

This is what I did.

Get one of the inline catridge holders from Lee Sanitation or West Marine http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/sto...amp;storeNum=11
and put it in the inlet line before the heads. Forget the scented coloured cartridges that are useless, and get hold of a swimming pool chlorine block ( I got mine many years ago from the Hypermarket in Cherbourg for a couple of pounds) break up the block into pieces and put a small piece about the size of a pea in the cartridge holder.

After an hour or so the flush water will smell like mild swimming pool water and by the next time you visit the boat the smell will have gone as all the bugs in the inlet pipe are killed.

You will need to put another small piece of chlorine block in the cartridge every month or so - you will know when its time to renew it because the odour will start to come back.

I have equiped both heads on my boat with this system, one has been running for 5 seasons and one for 3 seasons - it works perfectly. No mucking about with flushing pipes or disconnecting them and after 5 seasons any likely problems with valves or seals would have shown up.

I have enough chlorine block left to last another 10 years or so

Re: smelly loo\'s - headmistress

she posted a couple of days ago that she's off for a while, and won't have much if any internet access, and to pm her and she'd reply on return. Probably best to pm her a link to the thread

We got around this by fitting another fresh water tank, 42 litres, and use that for the supply. It has its own deck filler and if you are away too long from a fresh water supply then you can always fill it up with sea water until you get back alongside.

Surprising how long 42 litres can last!!!!!
