We are having probs again.

Replaced all the hoses in May, fitted a new Jabsco overhaul kit last December, and we are back to square one again, in fact its beyond belief that sucha bad smell can come from such asmall toilet.

I wonder if its to do with the fact that SWMBO pumped the toilet just as we were refloating on sandbank drawing loads of sand into the pump, we cleared it after a couple of days use.

I have ordered a new pump body and kit and will cahnge the hoses again thais weekend

HELP, ANY IDEAS, am I on the right track?

Are you sure it's not just the smell of water left in the intake pipe, this will smell even after just a few days but goes with a good lot of pumping through. Something to do with small bugs dieing and rotting.

Go to Tesco, "baby" section, get some Milton sterilising fluid.

Disconnect the inlet water pipe at the toilet end (careful... be prepared to reconnect if water comes in). Pour some neat Milton down the open end of the inlet hose, wait a bit, pour some more, shut off the INLET at the seacock, top up with Milton until the hose fills up, reconnect, and leave it for an hour or so.

Open up the inlet seacock, pump a bit, and your smell will have gone, at least for a couple of months, or until you use the toilet over a mudbank again...

dave.

Paul, wondered where you'd gone, not been around for ages.

sorry I missed you in Cowes, broken gearbox.

I think there is no escaping the smelly bog problem long term, its caused by gas from bugs that grow in the pipe. just give it a good flush each time you get to the boat. and quirt some air freshna about.

I just wonder about the route that the pipe takes, mine is so low that its full of water all the time hence no air in there, on the westerlies I worked on the pipes were routed under the deck head (its a saily boat thing cos of the leaning) and the problem was quite bad, praps due to a great big air pocket in the pipe allowing the bugs in the pipe to breed? Is your pipe a long route?

There is a woman in America called Peg Hall who is a specialist in boaty smells - she has even written a book about it!! I am sure it will be on all our Christmas list.

She also contributes to several user forums and seems quite happy to answer all questions (no need for the book then). I don't know all the sites she appears on but she is a regular on the Bayliner owners club site (BOC-WEB.ORG). Is there a similar Four Winns group? If there is I bet she monitors it.

Not really up to speed on these things, but how about a drop of domestos as you flush? Any bugs in the pipes will be killed off instantly and wont be able to come back.

If you only have a seatoilet, (urrgh) then it doesn't matter if you put chemical in it. If, however, you have a holding tank, this is a No No. If you start putting bleach etc in there, then you will kill off all the bacteria which you definitely don't want to do or your tank will really begin to stink. 2 types of bacteria in a holding tank. Aerobic and Anaerobic. It's ok to kill one but not the other. The Anaerobic is what causes the smell and it's ok to kill them, but not the Aerobic. So you have to be carefull which toilet chemical cleaner you use. Most are indiscriminate. Also a holding tank is not a pora-potty either, so there cleaners are not really suitable either. Best just to give a good rinse out with clean fresh water each time it is emptied.
