If I buy a ex charter yacht (European Flag) in the Med (that is VAT not paid) and then apply to put it on the UK SSR, do I need to show VAT has been paid to register it or is that just of interest to HMRC?

Registration nothing to do with VAT, so yes you can put it on the SSR if you are personally eligible, ie a UK resident under the definition you will find on the application.

you might have bigger problems with RCR/RCD regulations if you're planning on bringing the boat back to the UK, just as a heads up.

if you're not bringing it back to the UK then crack on and happy sailing :)

If he sails into a UK port then maybe the dreaded Vat man will be standing at the lock gates with outstretched palms.
