Just about to buy a new Mariner 2.5 but was told by dealer that they are prone to blockages. Has anyone else had similar bad luck

I've been using a Mariner 2.5 for the last three years. No blockage problems. Sometimes it won't start after a lot of slow-speed running, but it invariably turns out to be plug fouling. A quick clean and away we go again. Good little engines.

If he means cooling system blockages then that probably applies to most if not all the small outboards. He may have just been wanting to sell you something different for purely commercial reasons.

I have an ancient Tohatsu (they are all the same, just badge engineering)
It was blocked, but a bit of poking and scraping sorted it beautifully. I reckon you've probably got about........ooo........10 or 12 years before you get to that state!

i bought a mariner 2.5 last season and with my use and people borrowing it , it has done at least 150hrs since july and has behaved perfectly.

[/ QUOTE ] If that has only been used on Windy Mere then thats a whole lot different to the Solent, where Joanie is based. The lake is not salt so corrosion should be less and I guess it is not hard water either so scaling will be potentially much less.

Hi Joanie
I have sent you a PM regarding this as I'd be grateful to find a dealer still selling them.
If you could send details it would be appreciated (once you have your engine, of course).
Cheers
Rob

I have one ... had to have channels cleared by workshop about 3 yr ago ... age of engine ? Probably 10 yr or more.

Way he did it ? stuck an air hose up to water eixt and gave it a good blow ! Then into test tank ... yep- water came out a good-un.

Never had any trouble ... even run it on old gasoline ......

Only niggle I had and fixed myself ... the throttle lever tended to drop by itself and wouldn't stay at any setting - found that you could tighten the lever pivot and then fine !

I will certainly not trade mine in and definitely NOT for a 4ST !!
