after successfully transplanting my newer mariner 5 powerhead to the old merc sailpower 4(runs ok),stage 2 is reswapping the old flywheel, which has a charging coil..apparently i can use a car type puller to get the fly off, anybody done this, and what type/size?with thanks

Although it may (does) work.....I would try to avoid using a legged puller (that hooks round the rear of the flywheel)....it's very easy to damage the flywheel.

I don't know the engine you've got, but most require either a special puller that threads into to centre of the flywheel......or one with a flat plate, and 3 threaded bolts that fit into holes in the flywheel face.

Whatever you use: usual advice is to put the flywheel nut back on by a turn or so, to be sure you don't ruin the thread with the puller.

I've done it often by using a car-type puller with three hooks. Hook it in, tighten the screw (which should have a sharpened bolt to make sure it goes in the middle of the flywheel axle hence causes no damage). Obviously dont overstrain, and keep tapping the axle (through the puller bolt) to help release it. The bigger the puller, the more favourable the angle of pull is going to be.
