Anyone know who might stock a small strip of iroko in the Torbay (Brixham) area? I need to replace a bit of toe-rail capping - roughly half an inch thick, 2.5ins wide and about a foot long.

Or if anyone local has a free piece, I'll buy them a beer. (Or several beers if they fit it to the boat for me...!) :)

I believe that Southern Timber at Ipplepen stock Iroko Tel: 01803 813803. They also seem to be priced keener than the builders/timber merchants closer in - at least they have for other hardwoods and marine ply.. :) I don't currently have any offcuts, but looking to replace stringers in a project boat shortly and Iroko or Meranti are the two probable choices at the moment - depends on how much of a hurry you are in!

Thanks rbc - will give them a tinkle.

(Definitely in a hurry. I'll need to stare at my new piece of timber for at least six weeks before starting...)

:D They do say the planning is important...

Seriously, it's quite surprising how long the little jobs can take and a year on I'm questioning how I'm ever going to find the time to finish what I've started! I seem to spend as much time lately preparing against the elements etc as progressing the work... If I do use Iroko, I'll make sure I keep any offcuts. :)

Hello 2ply, if you have not found your small piece of Iroko, you could try Ian Bowles at Baltic Wharf Totnes, he specialises in teak decking and yours may originally have been teak, he would also probably have iroko and will machine to the correct size if asked. I do small joinery jobs on boats in Torquay and could fit if the price is right, I certainly dont charge what the yards do as I'm a retired joiner. Just make sure you get a longer piece than you need so that the replacement can be scarphed in properly and from the offcuts some wooden plugs can be made to cover the screw heads. Cheers, Kevin

Kevin - thanks for the tips. Do you ever make it as far as Brixham? I've got an internal bulkhead that needs looking at as well... if the price is right! :)
