small er, \'lobster pot\'

Just seen a 'lobster pot' in the fishing tackle shop. Its a steel mesh affair, about the size and shape of a rugby ball but with squared ends which have tapered openings of a diameter of say a ping pong ball. It is dropped over the side when on mooring or at anchor. Or even dropped and buoyed in a favourable place.

I want one, but how do I best use it? What species might I catch?

Re: small er, \'lobster pot\'

Get a bucket with a tight fitting lid. Stick some Mackeral in it and cover with Salt. Leave for 6 weeks. Stick one in the trap and leave overnight.

Oh, and don't forget to attach a very long bit of floating rope tied to an old oil container ( preferably sea coloured )

Re: small er, \'lobster pot\'

Make sure you use a float that is small and hard to see. Also set it in the entrance to a marina or on a route that maximises your chances of catching a yottie!

Good Luck!

Re: small er, \'lobster pot\'

For absolute certainty of a catch you only need two such pots with a rope from one to the other.

Do make sure that its a non-floating rope.

Re: small er, \'lobster pot\'

I thought floaty ropes were more popular due to increased chance of catching a yottie by the prop.

If you do get a yottie, you will need to cook it in a pressure cooker as most of them are very old & tough & whinge a lot - at least that's what the statistical sample on this forum indicates.

Re: small er, \'lobster pot\'

sounds a bit like a rat trap, Ive seen them by bins, second the leave in harbour and marina entrances with floaty string and hard to see markers idea, seems to be what the fishermen do near here.

When I was in my teens, leaving in the Med, I used to bite the octapus beteween the eyes, instant death!!

I agree with Little Ship.
You have spied a Prawn Pot.
A good bait for said things is a crab or two with their heads bashed a bit.
Or a tin of Cat food from Tescos, punctured of course.
MajorCatastrophe will confirm this method.
He has had some success with said arragement.
Possibly His most succesfull fishing experience to date!
