beneteau baroudeur. Went to see this class of boat but the owner forgot to say he had done some diy on the stearn….he had added a metre to the LOA and rigged a mizzen mast…..looked a bit too far gone at 6500 euros…….cannot sayI done go out my way to view prospects🙂

Here is a larger photo of the ketch -

I wonder if she has increased weather helm with that (relatively) large mizzen?
But she is sitting nicely on her waterline, and she would have a much higher kg/cm immersion than the standard hull......
This would stand her in good stead (or help to) when you have a party in the cockpit while underway, like in this photo below, taken from your other link.

This boat is for sale again in the ria de Vigo, might go and have another look the engine needed easy start to start and apparently still does although there is mixed opinion if easy start is bad or not.

It should not need Easy Start to start (except one might perhaps excuse a need for it on an old engine's first start after a long period out of use, but that will not be the case for a boat up for sale - they will have already run it). Typically, a need to use it every time will indicate poor compression (i.e. worn rings, or rings and bores, or valves not seating well). That is definitely a black mark in a boat for sale. You are likely looking at a fairly imminent need for work on the engine, I would have thought.

Presumably the 'This boat' you refer to is the one which also has the non-standard stern extendsion and mizzen. Sounds sketchy if not a bargain basement price (which €6,500 doesn't sound like.) I would normally defer to Bajansailor on boat design matters, but it doesn't look to me that the non-modified Barouder is struggling particularly with the weight of the crowded cockpit (plus extraneous outboard), and I doubt Wansworth (or any other Barouder owner) would often have that many in it. I'd be worried about how well attached the extension is to the original hull, whether such a mod would lead to problems getting insurance, and the potential for excessive weather helm. And does it have any significance in terms of berthing costs (one is already paying for the bowsprit length without commensurate usable space inside).

The €12,500 looks too tidy. The deep blue of the hull and bright white of the decks is very striking for its age. Has it been painted? If so it may not last long like that. Has someone spent a lot of money tidying an old boat only to find it is not very good, but wants to recoup their outlay/effort. Why has it got a second auxiliary engine? Does it indicate the main engine is unreliable or underpowered? (I think it says 28hp, which is excessive.) Even of you wanted a 'get you home' o/b 'just in case', you don't need 5hp and the weight that involves. It's unclear to me what the reference to Perkins 7401 is about. A Sole 28CV doesn't use a Perkins base engine, but a Lombardini. It's a now discontinued 2 cylinder, produced by Sole from 1976 to 1985, so not so young. The price seems high, even allowing for the North Spain premium (and I have a soft spot for Mk 1 Baroudeurs). Perhaps the bikini babes form part of the inventory and bump up the price?

Thanks for your observations but to clarify the situation the version number one in Luarca has the bodge on the stearn and is 6.500 euros and the version in Vigo withall the people in 8.500 euros and has the easy start problem. On further thinking our best bet would be the LM27 at asking price of17.000 euros but the wife at the momment of going to press is not convinced……the saga continues 😏

If the engine requires easy start and has been run like that for some time leave it alone.

I would have thought that the designer probably had a better idea of what he or she was doing than the person who extended that boat, therefore I would avoid it. A decent second hand outboard and negotiate on the price of the other one sounds a way better proposition. An LM27 wouldn't be a bad choice either...

OK. That's it. We need a forum campaign to convince Mrs. W.! :D Sign up here, everyone!

I think an LM27 would much better suit your needs (not that I'm biased! ;)), and meets several preferences/considerations you've mentioned.
1) Wider side decks than various boats you've looked at, and as you go forward, you first have the aft lower shroud to hang on to with one hand, then a step further the cap shroud on opposite side of side-deck with the other hand, then another step and you have the forward lower on the hand you started with.
2) Highish handholds on coachroof, especially on wheelhouse.
3) Seperate heads compartment.
4) Shelter from sun and rain.
Can be steered from cockpit (tiller) or wheelhouse (wheel). Also the standard cockpit canopy (which basically makes the cockpit another room when anchored/berthed), can be rigged with side parts rolled up, effectively forming a bimini. (The canopy just quickly folds against the back of the wheelhouse when not in use - only takes a few moments to put up or fold away.
5) Easy movement through boat. (Do I recall Mrs. W has some mobility problems?) No bridge deck means no climbing up and down stairs, you just step along - one shallow step from cockpit into wheelhouse, two shallow steps from there into saloon.
6) Low side decks makes stepping onto pontoon or in and out of dinghy easier, while pronounce sheer good height above water at bow and stern.
7) Et lots of ceteras!

Go for it!
