Hi there,

I have a small canal boat that I need to get an outboard for.... the depth from the top of the plate which the outboard sits, to the bottom of the boat is 35cm....... due to my inexperience, I have no idea if I need a short, medium or long length outboard... nay help si appreciated.

Also, I need to purchase an outboard 2nd hand, what tell tale sings shall I be looking for when buying? (I have no experience of buying used outboards) it will be 5hp or less, and will most likely be mercury / yamaha, less than 10 yrs and a 4 stroke....

Many thanks for any help,
Neil

Actually,

I was looking at the spec of this short-shaft Tohatsu: http://www.tohatsu.com/tech_info/own_man_pdfs/Toh_MFS4C_5C_6C_003-11059-7.pdf

And the Transom (new term to me, but I think it's the distance from where it sits on the boat to above the propelor).... is 17" / 43cm - with this in mind, It is likely the short-shaft would work no problem, correct?

thanks again for help,
Neil

Just to clarify the terms "short" and "standard" both refer to 15"shaft models. Most manufacturers use the term "short shaft", one or two use the term "standard shaft".
You will find that the measurement from the top of the transom or mounting bracket to the antiventilation plate above the prop will be about an inch more ie about 16"

Make sure that the AV plate is submerged sufficiently for the water pump to be immersed and that the prop will be in a clear water flow below the boat.
Dont fit a long shaft unnecessarily . If the short shaft proves to be too short either lower the mounting a little or raise it to suit a long shaft model
