I've tried various small compass on my MoBo ... don't really need one - but its the Seafarer in me that likes to see a compass while out there. None have really worked well .. I know I have magnetic interference from the wiring etc in the console .. but the compass's have all been poor to follow course change ... sticking or just being silly.
They are chinese car / boat jobs - so nothing unexpected.

I have been trying to find a reasonable reliable compass that's budget priced, good easily read, in a 2 way gimbal ... not a bulkhead version.

Nothing really strikes home as - Yes - That's the one ....

I had a Ritchie sport x-10 on my Shetland, about 2” across. It looked nice and worked, but I never needed it, all my nav was line of sight pilotage at speeds where tide and leeway were insignificant

Its always good to have a compass. If the power goes down and there is heavy rain or fog, especially fog, with a compass and a paper chart/pilot book, you can sound into shallow water, where you are out of the way and anchor while you fix the electrics. If the depth sounder goes down on you anything heavy on a piece of strong string will do. (That how they did it for years and a big lump of grease on the weight so they can ascertain the bottom.)

I still have a proper sounding lead that I use to calibrate the echo sounder.
