Hi, thinking of moving my boat to the med (but definitely not Spain). Anyone know of a neat and smallish air con unit for boats for a double berth and a small cabin? Needs to be smallish as boat is only 28ft and I don't have a gennie so it would run off shorepower. I would like to think i could install it myself if at all possible.

I have 3 of these and they are silent (about the same as a fridge running) with the exception that running water pours into the marina from 6 inch above the water line. In the heat this running water makes you seem cooler /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If anyone objected then I would just stuff a hose to the outlet into the water which would make it totally inaudible from outside the boat.

well done sir very constructive, to the poster, as i understand it you can get small unit's that are virtually silent, i do think that you may have to pay a little more for the better unit's regards mm1.

Normally I would have taken the post as a little abrasive however it is a valid post that needs careful consideration, air con adds a lot to the comforts of boating especially after returning to your boat early evening on a still night but its not worth a wrecked weekend as you fall out with other marina users !

"Dometic" has a small lightweight and silend unit,
this unit is for campers and caravans
we used one recently in a OB-Van.
pls ask if you can't find the Dometic info.

Park next to me in a marina with your damn aircon running and be prepared to be woken up every morning at 3am by my HiFi!

So what is your problem with aircon?

There seem to be two technologies with boat A/C. For larger than 9000BTU's there is a pump technology which is noisier than the 'other' technology. On my S37 in the Med I just have one 9000BTU unit (the 'other' technology) which is plumbed into the saloon and the guest cabin. I'm not being generous to guests in my DIY installation it's just that I could'nt find a way of feeding to the the main bedroom. A full installation (which for the S37 would be 14000 BTU's) would have a separate unit in the main bedroom, although supplied with water from the same pump.
I found space under the saloon setee to fit the unit. The only one with the right dimension for me was the Italian Climma unit. There is an agent in the uk . (Penguin)
If you want to DIY have a look at:

The outlet water pouring into the sea at night can be irritating for your neighbours (especially when they can't sleep because of the heat) so consider an outlet on both sides with a valve so you can choose who to annoy.
hope this helps
ps Spain is OK unless you are a resident (more than 183 days in Spain) or chartering your boat

We had a MarineAir (Dometic) self contained unit fitted by Peters to aft cabin of old boat. About £1500 iirc, with the nice LED display panel. Seemed ok. That was a combined compressor/evaporator all in one unit, so not exactly silent running of course. Needs inlet seacock, so you gotta lift boat. Outlets are often sloppily fitted hence the noise. You can fit it very close to w/line to reduce noise or even just under the w/line if you are very concerned about it, which is what Peters did with ours (though a purist wouldn't do that - he'd fit it above then install a downpipe to the outside of the boat's hull to lead it underwater)

Ref Daka's post, and not wishing to pick a fight with Daka, but I suggest not get HFL if the boat is going to France. There is zero service back up for HFL there in my exp (we had HFL genset on the phantom 42 we took to France in 2002, pita to get servide and repairs). The best back up is for Dometic gear, (MarineAir and CruiseAir) via the agent Polymarine in La Napoule www.polymarine.fr

Now you understand I am not criticising but ............

I nearly added a bit to the effect that I was only a UK boater and posts from med users should be seen as carrying more weight , I only really posted in an attempt to politely diffuse the noise issue.
As to service I have no idea, the gas is still going strong and repair has not been required but being based in the UK it is hardley used, in fact I will put £50 against your 10% that my aircon will outlast yours /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Your aircon will easily outlast mine. Mine is on 8hrs a day even when I'm not there! Boat got to France in commission in March 2009 and airco has 750hours running I guess!

That said, my old boat was the same. Airco didn't break down in 5 years, except for one pump that cost about £200. I think it was heading towards needing a major overhaul though, after about 7500 hours running :-)
