I am looking for a 2/2.5 hp outboard with the smallest external dimensions, ie the size of the upper part, not the leg length. Can anyone give me a pointer to which model to look for?

I imagine that the smallest new engine available is the Honda 2.3 which is air-cooled. Having compared this against the usual suspects (Suzuki, Tohatsu (& derivatives) & Solva it was the smallest). Concur that it won't be as small as a 2 stroke, but these are getting a bit hard to source new!

Landlockedpirate & RobF, thanks both for the replies. I'm in no immediate hurry so I'll look around for a small Yam/Mariner 2T but if that fails then I'll see if the Honda would work out.

Yamaha 2 stroke - excellent little motors. I used mine for the first time for three years a few days ago - it started second pull!

I wouldn't keep it in a locker though - not unless you want your bilges filled with petrol vapour. Mine lives on the pulpit under a waterproof cover.

If you are looking secondhand all the 2hp two-stroke Yamahas now seem to be very elderly (though usually working perfectly). If I'd been able to buy a new one last time I need to buy I'd have bought one as they are about as small and light as you can get and have a fantastic reputation for reliability.

The smallest easily obtainable reasonably new two-strokes are the Tohatsu/Mariner/Mercury 2.5 or 3.3/3.5 ones, the three makes mechanically identical except the top covers and logos. 3.3/3.5s have a F-N shift. You can even get one new still in the Channel Islands.
