Slopin\' batteries

Do sealed batteries (standard lead / acid) have to be mouted horizontal? Is it a problem if they are sitting at a bit of an angle (lets say 15-20degrees)?

Re: Slopin\' batteries

So long as the plates remain covered its ok. BUT when you are sailing you will have to add that slope to the angle of heel. You would have to be careful that you did not get to the point where they could spill acid.

Mine is horizontal and I only ever fill it so that the plates are just covered that reduces the risk of a spill to a minimum.

Re: Slopin\' batteries

People have been using flooded cell batteries for decades on monohulls so it must be OK. But it makes sense to put them on or near the centre line where the shock movement will be lower and they have little effect on the angle of heel.

Not quite true (being pedantic but someone might do it). Don't mount them on end so that the plates are horizontal. The weight of the plate stack will gradually distort them and squash the lower separators. The plates need to be near vertical.
