Wonderful book wonderful sailor telling a great tale which I am sure most of us have enjoyed but can anyone really believe the episode where, at anchor near Tierra Del Fuego, he spreads tacks on deck to deter intruders and awakens to the sound of indians hopping around the deck of Spray in startled pain? I suspect that yarn became embellished on the many lectures he gave fundraising along his route. Any other would-be minor sceptics out there?

Not me sounds highly plausible to me.Did'nt he also fire up through the decks with a rifle?
There is one bit that absolutely cracks me up & mentioning this again I think it's time I read it again .....for the umpteenth time:)

I belive it! but more than that I loved the way he wrote about it, something along the lines of ... 'A man cannot step on a tack without saying something about it' ... priceless.

Glad to hear you're using this: I plan to keep it much more aggressively up-to-date than has been the case in the past, but don't hesitate to let me know if you find errors or need clarifications.

I've never doubted the thumb tacks episode.
It's the 'pilot of the Pinta' episode that stretches my belief a little. All the same, I think I might have seen the same fella off Loop Head a few times.

I love this book. It's so witty and entertaining, I have to keep reminding myself it was written over 100 years ago.

I especially love his description of his father:
"He was a good judge of a boat, but the old clay farm which some calamity made his
was an anchor to him."

Time for a re-read ...
