Hi folks, just wondering - my winches dont seem to grip the rope very well. Even with four turns on there, the rope doesnt want to grip very well. Is it not customary to put something onto the drum to make it stick better? Im picturing something durable but with a sand-papery kind of finish perhaps? Not sand-paper exactly, because obviously that would damage the rope, but something with a bit of grip. Any tips much appreciated.

It can be done if you have the right equipment; if not you would need to find somebody who does as having it done professionally might be too expensive.

Many years ago I had a similar problem with some old Gibb winches. I stripped them, mounted the drums on my lathe and applied a light knurling, using a straight line pattern (like the 'milling' around the rim of some coins). It does not need to be deep; a small fraction of a millimetre is more than enough. Doesn't do much good to the anodizing but, like I said, they were old winches anyway.

Perhaps you know a model engineer or someone with access to a lathe?

That sounds like a good idea. I know someone, retired metal-worker bloke who might do it for me. Thinking about it, I suppose the frictional forces make sticking something onto the winch a bad idea, as it would soon get ripped off. Will try and get the winches worked as you suggest, thanks.
