I brought my P bracket into work today so that i can used the workshop press to remove the cutlass bearing.
Have'nt got that far yet as one of the grub screws is stuck fast, the fact that someone has in the past been a bit over zealous with a hammer and centre punch is not helping. After a soak in a releasing oil one has started to move the other is at risk of ringing the key or its self. My enthusiastic workshop staff have declared that i am to leave it to soak for a bit and then try the Gas Axe in the sound theory that bronze heats up at a greater rate then the stainless grub screw.
Failing that we will use a bench drill to drill out the grubs which will need to be replaced in a larger size once the holes are retapped.

Why is it that even the most simple of jobs in theory are a pain in the **** in practice. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Its always so tempting to just go at it non stop to get the job done but like your staff have suggested a little time to soak may help things along. Something thats under water for a long time isnt going to give up in a few minutes /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.
If the options you suggest fail then drilling out should be fine, even to the extent of picking out the old threads when it been drilled out.
If your bearing is shot why not cut it out instead then you may be able to go both ways with the grub screw ?

When someone told me this I thought it a wind up. Unless its to big to be practical try soaking it in Coca Cola and have another go. It worked for me on a bronze roller reefing gear that would not free up with all the usual tricks.

Dont bother with all the crap, drill it out and braze up the holes, drill and tap a new hole, quicker easier and a lot less hassle. Believe me, been there done that.
