Hi Liveaboards

I often read that you should fit slats under yer bunk to prevent condensation. In my boat that's difficult because of a few access panels underneath. I woke up with an idea this morning that maybe I could glue BLOCKS (same thickness as slats) to my ply baseboard. I'm thinking that this would not only allow me to lift my access panels without taking all the slats out, and furthermore it would allow ventilation in two directions everywhere under the mattress instead of one.

Can I ask the panel what they think about that?

I'm not sure how comfortable blocks would be to sleep on and I don't think I would fancy trying! We use an underlay that is rather like a thick scotchbrite scouring pad. It works extremely well and adds to the comfort rather than detracting.

Medman and Aran01

Sold. We have something called VentAir in our local Swindlery too, which is probably similar to both and a lot less faff than cutting up bits of wood.

Thanks to both

Pops

Use slats. Buy from Ikea for about £20 (cut them to fit) or local swindelry for £200. You choose!

I have coir matting -- basically the same as ventair, but not rubberised over slats and it works a charm.

All the best

Nick

I agree, the slats are connected and are no problem to lift up to gain access to the lockers underneath. We bought Ikea ones £9.00 each, very comfy.

We have proprietary system on our boat and it's great. The slats are held in place by webbing and there are rubber feet which lift them a bit and so that provides some spring and ventilation. Cant' remember the the brand name but there are a few systems about.
