Slack rudder

I have recently bought an old Kent 8m which suits my needs almost perfectly. There is however a large amount of slack, not to say movement, both vertically and laterally in the rudder shaft. No water seeps into the hull but I worry that I am going to be rudderless and embarrass myself. How do I mend this problem both cheaply and effectively. I am fairly competent at DIY.

Many thanks

Sounds like the bushes have reached their use by date, next time you lift out consider removing the shaft and rudder and check the bushes.

Most engineering shops will turn a new set of bushes at a reasonable cost.

You will most probably have a stainless steel tube glassed in between deck and hull that the rudder shaft (Stock) runs through, so little chance of any water getting in unless you wear a hole in it because the bush/es are worn out.

Secure the rudder with rope and remove the tiller then the locking ring under it and the rudder can be lowered on the rope, you may have to dig a small hole to get enough clearance to remove the last bit of shaft.

Hope this helps.
