The winch on my boat has stopped working properly. I thought at first that it was the bearing in the gypsy part but this proved to be OK. I then separated the motor from the gearbox. The motor will not turn over every time. It needs hand starting with a twirl and will then run. I suspect that the brushes are shot and the commutator wants cleaning. Does any forumite know where you can obtain brushes and how you change them? I presume you remove the four large screws on the spline end of the motor and then withdraw the windings, but am fearful of so doing in case I can't put it back together again! Tried a search to no avail! I thought I had seen a thread on this a couple of years ago, so apologies if it has been answered before. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

My SL winch which looks similar but maybe older than yours had the same problem last year. I think it had 2 long bolts holding the motor together but came apart with little trouble and the cause of the problem was the insulation on the brush wires catching on the brush holders that stopped the brushes being pushed onto the commutator. Trimming back 6mm of insulation on all brush wires and a clean up and she back to full power. A length of thread and a spare pair of hands to hold the brushes back are required to reassemble. It's worth a look before sending it away to be repaired.

Thanks for info. May be a different type of motor. There are 4 large machine screws at the drive end and 2 nuts at what is I presume is the brush end but I don't seem to be able to take that end off! Hope to get some information from SL spares.
