Our plans to 'disappear' off to France for five months are taking shape. The house freezer is slowly being run down .... some of the concoctions are interesting /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif , the plants have been fostered out, every trip out to the boat seems to entail more and more boxes of 'stuff', Euros purchased, credit card company advised, danbuoy fitted /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif , Linguaphone CDs loaded onto iPod /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif, (bonne est la douche) , chargers for phones, iPods, laptop, handheld VHF, backup GPS located, WiFi questions asked and in general understood.

Still have a question tho' about Skype that I can't find on their help screen. I know that calls to fellow Skypers are free in the UK and that I can call just about any number in the world for .015p a minute..... from the UK !!

What happens if me and my laptop are wirelessly connected (chance will be a fine thing !!) in France, calling the UK?

Does Skype still treat it the same as UK to France or is France to UK mega different?

Skype works fine when I'm chatting to people in Korea , South Africa , all over the Atlantic , Turks and Cacois , so don't see why France would be a problem
 
Brendan's link is for calling phones from Skype. Calls to other skype users computer to computer are free anywhere in the world.
 
I made the presumption that educated Skype users would know that skype to skype on internet anywhere in world is free, and that rates question was for Skypeout to land line phones, and question was what would that cost be. If I misinterpreted, sorry.
 
You can log on using your Skype name and password from any computer, anywhere in the world and use that account and your credit.

We moved home to Spain recently, just unplugged in the UK, then set up here and carried on Skypeing.

Brilliant , yes thanks Vince. All I need do now is get my hotspots sorted (cream ? /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif) and I've cracked it.
 
Definitelt worth adding two additional facilities to the basic Skype (both available as part of Skype Pro)

Skype in - a phone number in a country of choice for non-skype people to be able to ring you.

Skype out - an ability for the call to be received by a nominated phone if your laptop is not switched on or connected .

Tus relatives in UK can call a UK number and at UK national rates talk to you on your laptop. If you are not connected by laptop, then they can talk directly to you on your local sim mobile at local mobile rates applied to your skype account.

The only downside of this is the rate at which your skype account can be used up, and the difficulty in getting enough credit into that account for significant use.


Personally this facility has been fantastic and saved me a fortune.
 
Oh nooooo. I'm confused again. When I was aimlessly wandering the help screens last night I thought that I read that Skype In was only for London telephone numbers but was being 'rolled out'.

Skype basics.

If you have a SKYPE account configured in your laptop, you can use that for 'free' SKYPE connections to any other SKYPE user that happens to be online anywhere in the world, provided YOU have a connection.

The main issue is what qualifies as 'free'. If you pay a shed-load of cash to get a wi-fi connection just to make a few SKYPE calls, then they are going to work out expensive. Add to the fact that bandwidth may be restricted so call quality may be poor or unuseable. Finally you might log on only to find that your contacts are not on line afterall.

Other than that - it's great!
