Umm M20 M43 ---there are a lot of canals in the UK! Id heard of groupes repairing them but i thought that was just around london and the thames. As these newly reopend routes were probably built in the 1700s what would the size limmit be? I want to move a 38foot boat drawing about 3feet? What size and depth is the M20 and are the A82 and A87 main canals as well or smaller??Now i will have to try to find them? I wonder if there open during winter and spring??

beware of the A9 as BEAR Scotland are deconstructing this as usual.. Depth of surface varies from minor to enormous pot holes

I would think the easiest way to avoid tides is to sell the boat, and invest in a railway ticket, proceeds from the sale safely tucked in your pocket. Arrive at new venue, and shop around.... No waiting for tides - only trains!

On a serious note, could cross North sea, enter Firth of Forth, go through the cannal to the Firth of Glyde, then on up to the Crinnan cannal, out into the Sound of Jura, Firth of Lorne, Sound of Mull and you have Skye.
Most in cannals or sheltered water.
So there.

But did you travel from Scotland to England, or from Scotland to the UK?

Haven't you heard. The scottish parliament has annexed Newcastle and Sunderland in a last ditch attempt to improve the Scottish premier league. Alan Sherarer is the hot tip for next Scoland Captain. You wouldn't have paassed the border control as it is now in Redcar.

To get back to the serious nature of this thread though, the move will not do much to increase scotlands woefully inadequate canal network.

well i supose i can ask the scotish parlianent to do away with tides for a while? The trouble with sailing in that region is its bad for the heart! Trying to reach strangford lough i ended up being stat out in reverse!!! someone later told me it was to do with "tide" and in donegal i was left aground no water to be seen except a large deep chanel between me and the pub!
I wonderd if this strange"tide" problem in that area is anything to do with the odd dolphins that have large wiskers on their nose and watch you as you settle bumping on hard sand (thankfully not rocks)?
Whats worse is running aground and finding rocks every where--the other odd thing with this "tide " business is that when i set off for somewhere i end up somewhere compleatly different???like alice in wonderland--now on safe? canals there isent this "tide" thing is there?
I remember to that the north seas just as odd every time i left maldon i ran aground--at least touched ground In the med it never happens except in Corsica where a post was buit behind a sand bar--!! the corsicans are sorts of Irish (never say that to them though)
Well i supose skyes a nice crusing ground in summer? (does Scotland get summers?)
now im off to look at the canals and delivery again

Take a Day Skipper correspondance course, you'll find out about tides, the sun and the moon. Nothing about Scotland or Ireland though! Just as well perhaps, it gets too complicated in a 'foreign language'.

I dont need to do that but in the med spending the evening with a G&T planing WHERE to go but being able to leave when i want rather than when that "tide thing" wants is far more comfortable!!
While sitting in the walmth looking and thinking about the WONDERFUL scenery terrific unspoilt ancorages, is moderated by experince (i loved that region and i dident then have a heater aboard!) but the tides are a problem on a 50 mile passage at 6knots?? and ancorages while really wonderful dont lets me sleep very well in case of wether changes
The seas to can be very bad in some areas and really have to be considerd when planning a route in case the WX picks up also ive become less keen on rain cold and very cold water. i havent worn my Musto&Hyde jacket for so many years that it looks up to date!! And having tried on my trousers and jacket i feel immovable !!
Either i simply have to cancel my idea to buy a new boat or pay delivery costs is it still about 50p a mile??or have things changed??
