Some of these, the heavier duty versions, are advertised as cast gunmetal as opposed to bronze or brass. Do the gunmetal type present any corrosion problems?

If you can get gunmetal at an acceptable price they are well worth buying. Gunmetal is a tin-bronze, unlike the 'bronzes' commonly used for skin fittings and propellers. They will go on almost for ever, with minimal corrosion.

As vyv_cox says, gunmetal is more corrosion resistant and derives from the material once used to cast gunbarrels. They are more expensive but when the cost of valves and other fittings are added the difference in overall cost is diminished somewhat.

I only fit Bronze through-hull fittings and ball valves, never DZR on Tonval below the waterline.
Tiny bit more expensive, but nothing compared to a court case!!
Get mine from SEAWARE in Penryn.
