Good morning all. I have a skibsplast 600d that's powered by a yanmar 4jh 63hp turbo diesel. I'm happy with the boat but feel that at 14 knots full chat her stern could do with a lift. The last thing I wish to do is drill holes in her unnecessarily so has anyone here experienced the benefits before and after of trim tabs??? Many thanks. Siarc

Welcome to the forum. Are you referring to trim or smart tabs? Both will help keep the bow down but at 14knts whether it will be enough to drop the bow to fully plane is questionable. I would say that @ 63hp for your 21 foot boat is really where the problem lies. It seems a bit too marginal.

I'm not sure of the difference between trim tabs and smart tabs in fact I was not aware of smart tabs and what they did different! Yes must admit it's a bit small but I liked the yanmar over the more power full Volvo choice skibsplast give. It's not helping the situation that there is a socking great big diesel tank right at the back but can't change that situation hence I'm mulling over these trim tabs I see on other boats.

The 600d was always a bit of a hybrid from Skibsplast ... a semi-displacement boat from a stable that mostly built faster boats ... Approx 100 were made and became quite popular in the UK and Germany due to their directional stability (Keel + shaft). Boat is happiest around 12-14 knots and above this she will tend to ride a bit on her keel ... Not sure if trim tabs will help here..

Ok that's great! At least I know now! It is a weird boat I give it that. Many thanks for the help. Next time I will try to help you chaps!!

In principle a great boat and what you may not know about your boat is it's origin.... Rune Skibsrud developed the 600 D in the early 1990's on pressure form the German dealer for a directionally stable weekend cruiser and, who after seeing the drawings, instantly ordered 20 boats..... and as a result Skibsplast 600 D was realised. The Skibsplast 600 D was delivered in two models, standard and 600 D EX. The latter had a U-seating arrangement at the stern.

Well you have certainly enlightened me about the boat more than I found out on Google. As your the chap in the know on top of the engine it says to clean the heat exchanger every something hours is this necessary as it has a raw water water filter fitted to the vessels that came this way?? If you recommend it looks like there are two exchangers one for the engine and one for the gearbox???? I take it it's a case of removing the end covers and cleaning any debris?? Many thanks for all the help. Siarc.
