Skibsplast -- anyone know about these?

Having been looking for my first boat (so far unsuccessfully - had to withdraw from the purchase of a Draco Crystal due to hull problems uncovered during the survey) - a local broker has pointed me in the direction of a Skibsplast 600D.

On the face of it, this wasn't what I had in mind -- but I'm being persuaded that as a family day boat (my primary purpose), the Skibsplast (21', diesel, 16kts max, cuddy with head facilities, etc.), may actually fit the bill.

I'd be grateful for any views on this as an option -- either from the perspective of having specific knowledge of Skibsplasts or more generally. Many thanks.

Supposedly a Very good Scandinavian Make, Usually on Shafts(unusual on small boats).
Good Sea boat.

The current model range doesn't suggest they are normally on shafts. or is that a historical thing?
6 are outboards, 2 are sterndrive, 1 is shaft,.

Norwegian manufactured & good quality boats. Been manufacturing since 1957 in a niche market now dominated by the US manufacturers. http://www.skibsplast.no

The 600 D (believe you mean this one...)
Skibsplast_600D.jpg

never really hit it off, as it was a diversion from the "usual" day cruiser concept, and did not achieve the speeds normally associated with the other boats in their range... (nice concept though with well protected prop etc. In general, a good sea boats and very well hung together). Today you will see that the 605 offshore and 660 series packs outboards and stern drives, which is far more popular amongst the day cruiser enthusiasts.

don't get me wrong, the 600 D is a good boat, but be aware that it does have a limited market when you come to re-sell, which you probably will do at some time as this is the first one for you. However, you can expect a very well composed boat, which is easy to handle and most definetly will not "scare" its occupants with un-expected behaviour when manouvering or under speed. It is a safe boat and probably a good 1st boat for the family, but as its popularity is not great, push hard for a reduction in the price,.... if you decide to go for it that is..

Good luck

Yes, it is historical. The first ones into the country were 600D's if I remember correctly. The advertising stressed the fact that that here was a small sports boat that was unique in that it had diesel power and shaft drive.
I always thought they looked well put together.

Great advice ALF -- thanks... if things go well when I view the boat and it seems to meet my needs, I'll go in with a silly price assuming he's under pressure to renew his berthing fees too!

What may also be worth knowing as you go and look at the boat; The model in question was sold from mid 1992 through to 2000 (in Norway that is...don't know when thy hit the UK coastline). As far as I can remember, the 2000 model was actually manufactured in 1999, but sold as 2000, so check the transom, or where the hull ID is for manufacturing date, as they tend to differ from the bill of sale details.
Also check if it has one of these good looking, shiny wheels at the helm. (seem to remember that being standard) ....These get slippery when wet, which actually do happen in a boat.

Very good well made and solid boat.

No outdrive associated costs of course and very economical indeed, an excellent first boat.

Agree about the limited market but would also point out that for someone after a small shaftdrive diesel boat there is very little out there so they can get snapped up as rare to the market.

Out of interest what sort of money is it?

Ari.
