We arrived in Skiathos harbour this morning, our first visit for four years. We expected to see the pontoon crowded with charter boats, but there is no pontoon and no boats! The pontoon has been lifted out of the water and the pieces are piled on the quayside. Also there hasn't been one plane arriving since we got here, strange for a Saturday. Anyone know if it's usually this quiet, second week in October, or is something going on?

Blimey, I was in Skiathos about 2 weeks ago. The floating pontoon was very much there, and full of charter boats including Sailing Holidays and Sunsail.

Did it get damaged in the storm I wonder? I was on the town quay, but the staff were moving boats off the floating pontoon and advising boaters not to use it.

We were there a month ago and the town was starting to quieten down then. Friday is the busy airport day but local taverna owners we spoke to said that the season was pretty much over by the end of September.

I remember now - the haze has lifted :) - we were there on 30th September and there were a lot of "end of summer" parties going on. Free shots in the bars if I recall (or not as the case may be)

This reminded me of a late holiday in Crete a few years ago, we were leaving on the last evening flight 10 pm.The staff at the hotel were busy shutting everything down, pool switched off, the clear sparkling water turned a cloudy uninviting light brown mess! all pool loungers stacked away, tables and chairs removed to one end of the leisure area.Rooms being stripped out and restaurants shut early, staff just wanting to get away, no food available after 5 pm! We went to an outside Taverna to get away from it all. Those last hours were a real drag.
Remember never book a late holiday to Greece.
