I have a small thorn splinter in my left hand pinkie, will I ever sail again?

Probably (trust me I'm called Doctor). I doubt if you will be able to play the violin though.

Strictly non-medical tip picked up from a non-medic (so don't report me to the GMC if you get septicaemia) - splinters are easier to get out if you let them fester for a bit.

Actually there is only one thing more satisfying than getting a good skelf out and that's curing a black nail by heating a needle to red hot and burning a smal hole in the nail to release the blood.

I had to take a Sikh labourer (who spoke no English) to the hospital once after he dropped a manhole cover on his finger. It took three of us to hold him down while the nurse heated up the needle.
