We have a 30ft mobo on non tidal Thames and are planning a trip down to the medway this summer, with a possible side trip on way back on river Lee or Regents canal.

As far as I can see air draught is the key limit, but I cannot find any definitive information on restrictions and where they are. We have a 2.7m air draught. 0.9m water draught and 2.9m beam has anyone got any practical information as to what is possible.

Thanks

Steve & Chris

I took a similar sized cruiser around the London ring through the Regents canal about 12 years ago, its definitely doable but the tunnels are a bit tight on the side of the arches with width, anything you can do to take a few inches off will help.

Thanks Chris,

What boat did you have?. We have a stainless steel rail on the roof which was included in the measurements and would give it a bit more room if removed, I had already planned on removing lights and aerials.

Do you know of a useful guide book or chart anywhere.

Regards Steve

The Regents' is a bit of a no go area nowadays; apart from the rubbish full (and I mean FULL) of wall to wall liveaboards - many breasted up even on visitor moorings.

The Lea is nicer - but again you do have to get well up 'river' before you can moor for the same reason.
I'm told the creek is best avoided as the channel is not too good (probably better since the Olympics) and it's not much used (?).
A better route is via Limehouse lock and the cut.
You'll need a BSS and pay for a licence.

Thanks Guys

I will continue my research, any info on height restrictions Limehouse to River Lee and along the Lee.

Regards Steve

Hi
I live on Limehouse cut. My wheelhouse is approx 2.6m off the water and 2 metres wide. I can get from Limehouse Marina to the Hertford Union with it up. It needs folding to do the Hertford Union.
The regents going out of Limehouse towards 'acne and Islington is doable as far as Haggerston but the wheelhouse gets Very very close to the bridges so it is risky. I wouldn't risk the tunnel with it up because it is a very expensive bit of Iroko !!
You will probably pick up a fair bit of **** on the prop(s) and yes the visitor moorings are pretty much all occupied these days. Limehouse marina had a free 24h stop on the public wall which is patrolled so usually available but after that its a bit hit and miss really.

Depth wise, I took my fishfinder in the dinghy and recorded depths as shallow as 1.2m centre of channel coming onto the Limehouse Cut from the marina, by the sharp bends, aka the 'refugee camp' ;)

Its shallow there. 0.9m is ok but there is a lot of junk around there. Risk of damage to prop is present but not really on such a shallow boat to be fair.

Hi outinthedinghy.

If you need to take wheelhouse down to do Hertford union then sounds like that route is out for me, any info on going via Bow creek? and Lee itself.

Thanks steve

I have not been on the Lee any further than the junction with Hertford Union, nor have I been on bow creek so I don't know about those options.

If you have not seen the towpath situation regarding moored boats you might be a bit shocked - there really are a LOT of boats on any available towpath mooring.

Its not a moan or a rant it is a fact..

The Lee effectively stops at Hertford.

I live in Ware, 2 miles downstream, and there is always mooring, and also further downstream.

Plenty of NB's and Barges in this area, and a few GRP cruisers too, but headroom is the issue downstream, I think 7' is about it. Otherwise I would have loved to moor up outside our place for a laugh!

Further downstream, it's not so pretty in places, but moorings are not an issue on the whole from what I can see...

BTW the Hertford Union is at Hackney Wick, beside the Olympic park. Its not particularly near Hertford :)

Also known as Ducketts Cut it joins the Lee Navigation and the Regents Canal by Victoria Park.
