Hi all.
We have always had a rule on our boat that gentlemen (any MALE, even if not a gentleman) sits down to pee. Ladies too but they dont need to be told usually, mind you, I once knew a girl.......... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
We have lived on the boat for 3 years now and It is perfectly natural to me... I was "sat" today in our very nice spanish hospital and relalised that it has become so much habit I am doing the same ashore lol...
We never have arguments now about leaving the seat up, down etc.. never any "splashes", its safer in a seaway, by far. and the loo always smells clean, unlike some training boats frequented by male crew.. ughhhh !!!..

Wonder how many sailors adopt this rule, if you dont, try it.!

Just need to make it a MANS loo now, padded seat, foot rests, bookcase, beer pump and ash tray...

Thought straight over the side did away with all those sea cocks ahhhhm opening and closing and that kind of thing! Also you don't have to remember to shut them afterwards
so its much safer really.

Straight over the side is where you might go also!!

Apparently the US Coastguard have a standard acronym which they apply to many of the - Male - bodies they recover. It is FDFO, which denotes Found Drowned, Flies Open

Says it all

I`m really surprised at this.
Don`t you find the end falls in the water......................?

FDFO ...Sorry but sounds too much like a tall yankee tale to me. Unfortunately the sad fact of the matter is that if you are fished out of the sink having spent some time there you are unlikely to be wearing very much at all.
Last orders now

No, thats when you were found after trying to take a dump, before falling in backwards with your trousers at half mast.....FDTD

FDFO - I have googled it and come up with nothing. So I have sent two messages - one to the USCG and one to Snopes to try to find out if there is any truth to this rumour. I'll report back if I get any response.

we do, at home too. You just have to have to clean the rancid splashes to put you off standing!

I impose this rule under way and agree entirely (as the person who cleans the heads at the end of a trip).

I have friends who live in a huge camper in Canada. They convey this by saying "Standing orders - no standing"

I have a sign in my head.

"Gentlemen please be seated"

I frend also had a sign in his head

"Wee aim to please will you aim too please"

My marina takes a dim view of peeing over the side of the boat!

Real sailors always do it standing up. In a blow, when you're all togged up in your oilies, you just put one foot in the bowl and pee. Simple. Except you have to remember to take your boot off first.

Maybe you just need to install a p-valve in your oilies. Then you don't need to worry about taking off your boots. Just stand in the cockpit and wash it all down with a bucket of water.

Quite agree. I always sit down at home if I have to get up in the night, because after standing quickly one is not too steady, especially if half asleep.

I read an interesting theory re Robert Maxwell. Apparently relieving the bladder alters the pressure on some blood vessel or nerve, and this can cause a momentary faintness. The theory was he fell over while peeing over the rail.

In some cultures it's a man-thing not to sit down. There is a contemptuous German word for the sort of effeminate wimp who sits down - sittzpinkler, or something like that.
