Siting a GPS

I'm considering re-siting my GPS in the cockpit and wondered if anyone had thoughts on the minimum advosable distance between it and my steering compass? Many thanks

normally around 1m.
but just try & see if it affects the compass.
i have a Silva Hand0bearing compass mounted on the chart table the plotter is less than 100m/m from it & the gps around 400 m/m no probs

also important not too mount the GPS ariel too high above CL of boat.
I had mine initially about 2 metres above c of g and when the weather got rough
the Gps reading would swing from side to side very confusing for sel steering gear.

Nearly all manuals should have a minimum distance quoted ....

It is standard practice on marine gear to state clearly.

Anyway you should find that 2-3ft should be ok ..... but remember that electric cables can be worse than the actual instrument ..... and should not run by close.

It is important to remember when using the "try it and see" method that you need to check the compas reading on different headings, in other words swing the compas. You don't have to do it formally but a quick comparison with a hand bearing compas on the cardinal points just to make sure that you're ok all the way around.
