Hi ,
Just another problem to be solved
originaly mahogany ( tabasco) was used for the deck shelf /clamp
is it better to replace this by a good quality oregon pine of the same dimensions or is it a better idea to use sippo utile ,
Same goes for the deck beams wich were also mahogany : some people seem to prefer oak, other oregon ; last for the weight only? or?

kind regards ,
Werner

Mahogany is easy to work, but is not durable - eg susceptable to rot. True mahogany only available is Brazilian. Utile, Meranti, etc are even softer, and a nasty shade of pinky brown
Oak is better, harder to work, American red and white is available, english hard to find. Ferrous metal stains Oak
If using oregon pine - aka Douglas Fir? - usually used for pole spars - be aware that it is not as stable.
I would say in order of preference but not expense
English Oak
American Oak
What they now call pitch pine, in Med called Mellis
Brazilian Mahog
African/far Eastern Mahog
