Singlehanding - why do you do it?

I don't - I have no doubt I could singlehand the boat in open water, but I also know that every time I came into port, I would make yet another hole in the hull!

Because sometimes I want to go sailing more than the rest of my family do, and because I find it a nice, not too scary, challenge, involving careful planning and forethought and the need to make sure that the boat really is seaworthy. Probably for the same reason that I sometimes step over a motorbike rather than into an estate car.

My time is unscheduled. When the mood takes me and the weather/wind/sea etc etc are "right for the moment" I go for a sail. Nobody else around to ask for a sail/crew so I don't waste time asking/phoning around/waiting for volunteers.

I just go by myself.

Besides, I like being alone, be it on shore or afloat. (somewhat like TQA, but my labrador is only a "round the bay" sailor, for now)

However, if someone is ready and prepared to go NOW, I'll happily take them.

I also like a bit of an adventure.

I have always enjoyed sailing on my own. When I sail I tend to play -eg. fiddling around with the autohelm and seeming to look out of control and daft. I enjoy playing and do not have to consider anyone else ( Obviously avoiding any inconvenience to other vessels) Boat +sea = freedom to me , I keep out of other peoples way and there I follow my own rules and inclinations .:encouragement:

I had been sailing with my husband every sommer for 24 yrs and loved every minute of it. When he died last year I couldn't bear the thought of selling the boat which had been such a big part of our life together and our second home. So I thought I'd give single handing a try and so far I haven't regretted it. I don't do marinas and harbours just sail to anchorages with lots of space for mistakes. My boat is in Greece. Here's a selfie video of a day of single handing.

Don't singlehand much but I do it for the same reason i go sailing with crew.
It gives me a difficulty to overcome and thinka bout in a singleminded way

Good thoughts, productive even. A good work out, selfishly don't have one eye in the crews pleasure or safety, I can sing haha, play the guitar hahaha, it's all rather nice and nourishing

I'm having difficulty in understanding the basis for the question. It is the natural and default situation for me. I like sailing and I do not need anyone else to assist me to do so - I just go.

Anyway, I get a sense of achievement in a single-handed passage and I have only myself to consider for provisioning or entertainment so I have come to prefer my solitary life afloat.

1. Because my other half doesn't enjoy sailing and won't go out of sight of land.
2. I would rather go singlehanded than not at all.
3. The is a huge sense of achievement completing a passage by ones self.
4. I don't have to worry about a crews ability and welfare. ( but obviously I would look after a crew if I took a crew)
5. I can please my self and gain some peaceful solitude
6. Getting back to civilisation and having a natter is even more pleasureable.
7. I can sit on the crapper with the heads door open. :)
8. Food is easier.
9. I scare only myself and not others!! :)
10. I believe singlehanded sailing hones sailing skills much more, and more quickly, forcing one to think ahead and plan passages and pilotage with a view to avoiding Mr Cockup (self preservation) than a fully crewed boat.

I have singlehanded between Wells Next the Sea to Plymouth and cross channel, (not in one go :) ) and only occasionally wish I had a crew to share the sights I have seen and enjoy some beer/banter on the boring bits.
If I had a sailing family then I guess I would not have done so much singlehanded sailing and would have an entirely different view.

I only singlehand when OH is not available and when I wish to go for a sail at short notice, otherwise I prefer having one or more crew aboard.

I single hand mainly because other people end up annoying me :) I do like sailing with other people, and do a few trips a year like that but they tend to be bigger trips with more organisation. I tried sailing with my ex a few times but she didn't seem to think that the phrase "time and tide wait for no man" applied to women, and the marina sill strongly disagreed with her. I tried sailing with my little brother once and he moaned about the boat being slow (he likes motor boats). I tried sailing with my dad a few times and he complained that there wasn't sufficient alcohol on board to make it to Cowes...

OK, the real reason is probably that I'm a little unreasonable when on my own boat, but that's why I bought my own boat :D

One can readily drive a car - or a coach - siinglehanded. Same with an aircraft. There's really no need for another on a bicycle or a mo-bike. Skis. Sledge. Skateboard.... Sailboat....

I enjoy convivial company onboard. But company is not always convivial or available. There's often some constraint. Just now and then, I like pleasing myself about when and where I go, and when I come back. Seemples!

Lots of reasons,
it's easy just to go when you want to,
Very good practIce, makes you think well ahead for every manoeuvre,
Long distance it's quite astounding to be in the middle of an ocean all on your own, longest I did was 32 days, *very* chilled at the end of that :)
The challenge, I just keep going back for more,
The coffee lasts longer ;)
Why not, it's great
