Jemmy I presume you're called that because you're a wee cracker!
Seriously I think single handed goes back to when crew were also called hands and a single hand was a single crew member ... which makes you wonder about the phrase "One hand for the ship and one for yourself" ... Apparently Sailbad knows all about that.
When I last did a single handed race I was using both hands, feet, teeth, backside crack and every other handy appendage/body part I could find to hold or wedge in a rope, especially when the spinnaker went up. Was I cheating?
PS I'm not really interested in an answer, I only posted to test my teddy bear picture.
PPs When holding a spinnaker sheet between buttocks, having it pulled out by a gust stings somewhat.
Lost rt hand in July this year after major problem only bought yacht ( W,Griffon) last September to get back into sailing.Don`t know wether to sell it,or keep it spent a lot on it.We`ll see. does any body know who makes a 1620 size power driven winch can`t find one in any catalgues.
ps Extravert had a look at your web site after Maryport request nice looking boat were there many built as the name did not spring to mind.
Sorry to hear that, it must have been a major trauma. I would imagine though that if you organise a crew then it should'nt really stop you doing too much. However I w would imagine sailing solo would be extremely awkward? I really do have the utmost admiration for you and hope that all goes well.
Thanks Jimmie. It certainly did come as a bit of a shock, still theres always somebody worse of.Getting a cew will be another problem to sort out!.boat now 300 miles away.
I recall racing in the days of good old Rhodesia when one of the Fireball skippers only had one arm. How he did it I never knew - but he raced competitively for years. He was known as somewhat irascible and crews did not last long. One story recalls a major argument off the start line at our biennial regatta off the Coast of Mozambique where he ended up by smacking the crew out of the boat. The crew swam ashore (quickly - sharks !) and the skipper completed the race singlehanded - no cheating.
Best wishes.
Ken

I like boat right little jem, typical British ahead of its time.,did you rebuild her? Funny you having a Faireyit rang a few bells I have some copies of the Fairey review`s from 1958-1960 when Fairy aviation was sold off to Westlands. In the December 1958 magazine is an artical on the Atalanta, but did not have aft cabin, but had big engine coverWith sliding hatch.also in the artical has comment (approved by the world- famous helmsman Uffa Fox,R.D.I.,she was the star of the 1957 Nationa Boat Show in London, and last January she was chosen by the Daily Express as the glittering prize for the 1958 national boat show! In the March 1960 review has artical dominating the entire forecourt of the Earls Court during the show was this Fairey Marine Atalanta with her standard tender(a Dinky) stowed astern. Any news to you .
Very Best Regards Andy
