single hand to holland

Pick your destination so that you stay out of the very busy TSS off Europoort/Rotterdam. At the end of a potentially exhausting trip you do not need the confusion it might cause. So do not aim for Scheveningen or the Haringvliet, better go straight to Ijmuiden.

Lowestoft - Ijmuiden or Den Helder might be within your range as a daytime trip. We did it this year (Ijmuiden) starting at 6 am and were tied up by 11 pm. This would avoid the risks of losing sleep overnight - a prime cause of accidents. The course is straightforward as long as you make note of the shallows this end and some platforms at the other.

You are going to have great fun with 4 single-handers manoeuvering in Dutch locks and I wish I were there to watch. It's not impossible of course but just needs careful planning. You can get a Schengen form at the harbour office in Ijmuiden and leave it in a box there.

Did Lowestoft to Ijmuiden this spring and back this summer. You can do it all in daylight if you set off at first light and pick favourable conditions. Definately recommend this route as it is the shortest and could not be easier - a dead straight line due East. The entrance/exit is simple with a marina close by the sea at both ends. The buoys for Ijmuiden start miles out to sea and no TSS etc.
Easy trip to Amsterdam and through to Markenmere etc. The Netherlands are a great place to sail.Highly recommended, good sensible clean country and nice people

Schengen form can be downloaded

You can also get forms at the marina inside Lauersoog. We tend not to bother ourselves much about Continental red tape, but it's handy if you're passing one of these.

You may wish to consider leaving before first light as an insurance against a late arrival. If there is any fossicking about in the dark to be done, it is probably better to do it in your own backyard.
I find 2am a useful compromise.
