I'd like to fit a speaker in the cockpit for the radio/cd player down below. I don't want to make cutouts in the cockpit seat coamings to fit them which leaves the instrument housing above the companionway. However, there's only room to fit one speaker there.

My question - does a small (approx 10cm) speaker exist that contains left and right channels in one unit? I've had a decent search myself and don't think it does? If not, has anyone tried a method such as described here - http://www.rane.com/note109.html - to combine the left and right stereo channels into one mono output?

I needed a small speaker for watching tv through a laptop, I needed one that would amplify, I purchased the one below,it has two speakers, one at each end, it has a battery charged up by usb (or other means) it is tiny, but very good sound and volume. may be worth a look

Id think from the value of the resistances the circuits in the link are not intended, nor suitable, for combining loud speaker outputs.

It is OK to connect the 2 speaker outputs from the radio amp or whatever to the one terminal of the speaker with the earth return of both to the other side of the speaker, Provided you fit small resistors to isolate one output from the other.
As Vic says the circuits referred to are for low level high impedance inputs not outputs.
You need resistor around 4 ohms (3 or 5watt rating) between each output wire and the common speaker terminal. This will avert any concern of the 2 outputs being out of phase and fighting one another. (there being a total 8 ohms between the) but it will waste a little of your power. (about 1/3 of output voltage lost) I don't think you will notice the power loss.
if you are leery about this approach just fit one speaker to one output. Again you will not miss much. Leave the other output not connected or connected to your inside speakers.
good luck olewill
