Impending short trip to Singapore allows the possibility of chandlery purchases. Quite fancy a Garmin plotter if cheap. Is it likely to be?
Also as a sailor with a day or so spare where shall I not miss? Not really interested in purely touristy stuff.
thanks

Prices in Singapore are not a great deal better than they are in UK. Pirate software is virtually non-existent (although can be obtained by those in the know). Laptops are appreciably cheaper than in Europe. I have never found many outlets for leisure boating equipment but I guess you coiuld do some Internet searches to find them. Customs back here are pretty keen on quizzing the early morning ex-Far East flights, so you may be caught for duty.

The one attraction that I never miss is the Jurong Bird Park. I have visited it on several occasions and IMHO it is one of the best things you can do for one day anywhere. Yes, it's touristy but utterly brilliant. There are more wild birds there than caged ones (e.g. 10,000 cattle egrets roost there every night) all set in very pleasant surroundings.

Re: Singapore - those were the days

Has all been PCed since my missspent youth in the MN. (I am old enough to remember the CokaCola girls - always a highlight of even a short anchorage stopover.)
Bugi, Arab, Cahge alley all long gone when I revisited couple of years ago. They were rebuilding replica old streets under glass to try to get back some atmosphere.
If you have a couple of days spare I would hop across to Sarawark KK in Boreno, and catch the last of the virgin jungle before its all chopped down.

Re: Singapore - those were the days

Quite agree with the Sarawak bit, particularly up the Rajang River, but don't get yourself invited to a wedding. Three days solid partying and drinking. /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Went there 4 years ago and I can still taste the arak (rice brandy) and blame this one trip for my current penchant for a tipple and my appalling reputation on these forums.

Have a look at Raffles Marina. The boat store is awesome (but then I do live on the West Coast of Scotland for comparison).

Also highly recommend Raffles long bar. The Only place that you can willfuly drop litter in Singapore without being executed

Take an evening taxi ride out of the city and go to one of the street markets. Everything from a pin to an anchor in the good ones, plus the best local grub off the stalls. The best one I remember was on Yu Chu Kang road.
Lots to do in the daytime... Tiger Balm gardens, Orchid Gardens, croc farms up on the straits. The Tengha war memorial is sobering.
I know not about chandlery, but there was a collection of lock-ups around the harbour up to Lavender street which sold all sorts of plunder including old brass stuff. Far more interesting!

Hi. We are located in Singapore and are more than happy to give you advise whilst around. Are you coming by boat or plane? Chandlery prices are typically normal retail times two due to lack of business and competition (I always mail order from the US or Europe). Tell me what you need and I can direct you at least to the best sources in town. If you are coming by boat I can get you (errr your vessel) berthed at better rates as well.

There are several places in Singapore that sell Garmin gear,I recently purchased a Garmin Map 76S for S$690 (divide by 2.8 approx for UK pound) including 4% GST which can be claimed back on departing Singapore this included a cable to down load from your computer.
