Since when has a reef knot been different to a square knot?

Was idly trawling knot tying sites (ok, so I like knots!) and came across this:

http://sailing.about.com/od/learntosail/ss/howtotiesquareknot.htm and http://sailing.about.com/od/learntosail/ss/Reefknothowto.htm

He reckons that a reef knot has a bight - I'd call that a slipped reef personally.

His lordship Ashley has nothing (I can find after at least 20 seconds of looking - it's heavy) about this form of reef knot. I don't see the point of the slipped reef personally - it's so simple to capsize a reef knot and slide it apart, why would you put a slip in it?

So what does the panel think?

I'm with you. About.com is hardly an authoritative source of anything.

As it happens, I did always tie Kindred Spirit's reef points with the bight, but I would call it a slipped reef knot.

Pete

I thought the same about about.com - but he claims some bona fides in his bio and it set me wonderin'

Square knot=reef knot in my book too.
I agree with him that a reef knot can sometimes be difficult to undo

I doubt that many would think a reef knot is a slipped square knot.

According to his bio, he is American and learnt sailing in the bayous.

I prefer to trust The Admiralty Seamanship Manual, Nicholl's Seamanship, Knight's Modern Seamanship (American) and Manual of Seamanship for Boys... 1883 all of which show the square or reef knot.
