Iam looking at radars and chartplotters, have got brochures and reports of raytheon systems and simrad but I can't decide myself which is best, for performence and budget! (Raytheon RL 70/RL 72 or Simrad CA 50/RA 52. Any one got any ideas that could sway me in one direction or the other?
Ideas appreciated as ever!

Raymarine radar is fine. We have R70 plus scanner 5s, works well. The RL70 is (I think) just a display. The performance will depend v much on which scanner you get. The SL72 is just a mid-range radar with 2kw radome AFAIK. There's no chart plotting function with any of this stuff AFAIK

The CA50/RA52 is altogether higher end stuff. It has a truly huge 15" TFT screen and looks/works fab. You need a massive dashboard if you want to flush mount it though. CA50 is combined plotter/radar, RA52 is a radar with 4kw open scanner. Big stuff.

The Simrad kit you mention is very different from the Raymarine, in terms of price/features. Praps can you say more precisely what you want (basic stuff, mid range, or massive colour screens?), what boat, what sort of budget, and then we can make more specific suggestions. Furuno well worht a look. See also BoysToys post below

To make sure you are looking at the latest kit, the brochures should be Raymarine, not Raytheon.

Having used their kit for years, no problems, but best of all their support is really excellent.

May be worth a call to MBM for a contact at Raymarine, since Raymarine sponsors the MBM cruising club.

I am going for Simrad and Furuno rather than Raytheon. I prefer the Simrad kit for minor reasons, I have nothing against Raymarine except I feel that their advertising excessive and it makes me wonder why good kit needs to be hyped?
