My Simrad TP 20 of about four years perfect service has begun to make strange clicking noises, particularly at the beginning and end of its full travel, as if something is jumping out of gear. It still works OK but also makes more noise than it used to. This year, rather than leave it on the boat all winter, I brought it home thinking it might benefit from a drier atmosphere.

Any ideas or solutions?

Regards, Mudhook

If it's the same drive system as the TP10 It may be the teeth on the drive belt that are worn and causing it to slip. I had to renew mine. You can open it up and watch it working to see if this is the problem.

I had a TP20 which also made those noises, and as Spyro says you can get them apart. The drive system looked like a rack and pinion affair and the small nylon cog which is on the end of the operating rod, was just spinning round and not meshing with the drive. The cog is only a press fit and works loose, you can slide it along, degrease the stainless rod that it runs on ( I was at sea and had to use lighter fluid but it worked) and then Araldite the cog back in place. I left it for 24 hours before I reassembled the unit, there is a gasket between the two halves of the casing and just to make it 'waterproof' I ran some 'creeping crack filler' around the join. The unit worked fine for many sea miles afterwards. Hope this helps.
