I have been advised that I need some Hydralen 32 (Viscosity 32 cSt) for my hydraulic steering no one seems to have ever heard of it, its supposed to be an environmentally friendly hydraulic oil. Does any one know an equivalent synthetic hydraulic oil environmentally friendly or otherwise. I have tried Google.

From reading this log, it seems you're not alone in finding it difficult to get Hydralen. Interesting that Simrad engineers apparently didn't know about it! I'd have thought any good quality hydraulic oil of the same viscosity would be suitable.

You don't say what age and model no your drive is but I have a Robertson Autopilot with an HLD 2000 linear drive made in 1996. In my instruction manual it says

High quality hydraulic oil of of viscosity in the range of 15-40 cSt at 40degC can be used for the drive unit (eg Norol HM32, Shell Tellus27, and Esso HP15)

Personally I have used universal brake fluid equivalent to the above for years and had no problem. I think if you avoid the Girling (red) fluids which are different the system isnt fussy as it uses pretty standard nitrile seals.

Hope this helps.
