Hi
Can a Simrad rs8300 manual radio telephone without SOS be set up for DSC with a st50? Is there a recommended dsc controller for this set up.
Thanks

There are two models of 8300, one with the SOS function and one without. A non SOS model cannot be updated to an SOS version.

Unfortunately if you want a DSC radio then you will need to buy a new or used DSC model.

There was a very expensive separate DSC controller, RS8400SD, designed to go with the RS8400 VHF. It was priced at £755 +VAT in the 2003 Simrad catalogue. However, I thought the RS8300 VHF you are talking about was a RS8400 with an "SOS" button, so I am a bit perplexed as to why you say yours is without. The RS8400SD may still be available and at a large discount as it is obsolete. Try contacting Simrad at Fareham on 01329-245100.

Good luck.

P.S. The RS 8300/8400 radios were originally Shipmate equipment and are IMHO excellent, I preferred the performance of my RS8400 to Simrad's newer RS87.

If you speak to Terry Wood of Odin Marine I am sure he will have the answer. Have just completed my VHF DSC course and he seems to be very knowledgeable, especially on Simrad equipment. From what he said it appears that some of the older Simrad equipment can be updated with a DSC card but generally it is uneconomic to do so.

Connector for RS8300

Jibaro, The connector is the same as used on ATA computer hard disc drives. You can purchase these at Maplins for about £2.00. The plug alone is their code JW64V or as a short lead A27AB.

The wiring convention for the RS8300 as shown in the picture for the A27AB is running from Red to Yellow. Red=Positive, Black=Negative, Black=Speaker, Yellow=Speaker

Hope that this helps.

Does anybody know the difference between non DSC models of the RS8300 and RS8400. Are the handsets the same/interchangeable?
