Questions - can a simrad 3g radar work with another make of nmea 2000 plotter. Have the radar but not happy with the b and g plotter

No, the radar doesn't use the nmea 2000

I have inherited simrad kit on my new ( to me) boat, with a 3G Radar. The boat came with a 2012 NSS 8 plotter in the cabin, which is Ok. However' I fitted a NSS 9 evo 3 in the cockpit, with everything interconnected. I bought simrad to make connection to all the existing easy, but I have to admit I have found it very good. Compared to the basic small plotter on my last boat, I am impressed with all the capabilities it has, and easy to use. simrad and B&G are basically the same, aren’t they?

The connection to the plotter is probably Ethernet not NMEA. So who knows, someone with experience of trying it will probably be along soon enough. Myself i’d stick to matched brands on that unless a very good reason to fiddle with it.

Correct. I had to buy an Ethernet expansion box to interconnect the Radar and both plotters. The connection of each device to the simrad nmea system, simnet, was also required.

I’d have thought (in the case if the radar expansion box) that’s to pass fast heading data from a rate compass on the Simnet to the radar computer. It’s not sharing radar data to the Simnet. The plotters are connected to the Simnet for instrument data.

Radar data is a proprietary format which needs to be decoded by specific software on the display device. Obviously Navico’s plotters have such software for their radars, but no other commercial plotter will do. There is a Navico 3G/4G plug-in for OpenCPN though if that helps.

Which works very well and can be used in tandem with a Navico plotter with a bit of electronic jiggery pokery
