Simpson Lawrence Windlass sticking.

Maybe a little premature as I haven't had time to investigate, so I thought who better to ask than the sages on this forum.
Last weekend, raising the anchor it was squealing (I am tempted to say like a pig), and seizing up as if a rope was caught up. It would then lift a couple of metres of chain and it would stop again. Any thoughts ? I don't know the model but it is but the boat is 1995 and the anchor weighs 45lb.

Are you sure its actually sticking or is perhaps the electric motor running and the internal clutch is doing the slipping. Sounds a bit like that may be possible.
Alternatively is it the motor that is getting a little weak and therefore giving up at the slightest change in pulling effort.

Did a strip down on my windlass motor (1993 lofrans with a mexico brand motor) last trip where the motor / windless was doing as you describe. Good clean out with light sand paper, clean the rotor plate and working fine now at twice the speed and presumably power.
I put it down to usual crud that develops in a motor after 16 years of shorts bursts of up and down and the winter lay up which finsihed it off.
PS only could get quoted for new motor guv at £500 ish.
