Many thanks to those that pointed me in the direction of SL Spares from my original post. John kindly sent me a pdf of this tired old S-L-Francis Type 800 windless.
It has shown me that it was built with an emergency hand lever and where it goes. the problem is I dont have it on on the boat. Its similar to a push bike half moon open spanner. Its designed to hook into the gypsy and lever it inch by inch.
If anyone has this item or knows a friend that has one tucked away somewhere I would be very grateful.
